A New Perspective on Wedding Photography… with Drones
Last year, I decided to pick up a new hobby and bought myself a drone. Having a friend who used one, I knew it would quickly become a new favourite purchase, and it certainly has! It has also added a new dynamic to the way I approach wedding photography, adding a fresh and exciting dimension to the images I capture and I’ve spent this season playing/practicing how best to use it, and every couple I’ve asked permission to do so have come away with some great aerial photos.
I’ve had the pleasure of using the drone to create stunning aerial images for a few venues across West Sussex.
Drone wedding photography is rapidly gaining popularity, and I’ve had a lot of interest in it at the weddings I’ve shot so far this year. So, I thought I’d answer a few of the many questions people have asked me about them. If you are thinking about incorporating drone photography into your special day, I’d love to hear from you, so why not get in touch and we can chat through your plans.
What is a Drone?
In simple terms and in terms of wedding photography, a drone is an unmanned aircraft equipped with a camera, allowing it to film and photograph from an aerial perspective. This unique vantage point is perfect for capturing truly memorable wedding photos!
Why Choose Drone Photography for Your Wedding?
Drones are ideal for wedding photography because they capture breathtaking aerial images that showcase key elements like your venue or the bride’s dress in a way that standard photography just can’t match. They’re particularly great for large group shots taken from above, allowing you to capture the entire wedding party in one stunning image. Drone photography can also highlight the grandeur of your venue and its surrounding vistas in a way that really stands out.
Key Moments to Capture with a Drone
One of my favourite shots to capture is of the couple together in the grounds of their venue. I’ve been fortunate to work at some beautiful locations across West Sussex and Surrey, where the stunning landscapes are perfectly suited to drone photography.
There are also other significant moments that a drone can capture beautifully, and I can help you plan these to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities. For example, we could photograph the time between the ceremony and the reception, as guests mingle outdoors, or capture a dramatic group shot with all your guests outside the venue.
Drone photography also offers a distinct perspective compared to traditional cameras, as it can include more of the surrounding scenery, adding an extra layer of depth and interest to your photos.
Considering the Weather
It’s important to note that drones aren’t able to fly in rainy or windy conditions. Whilst I’m always looking for opportunities to fly, there are limits, and if I can’t safely fly on the day then we will have to look at other creative ways to capture those special images.
Are Drones Noisy?
Drones do generate some noise, and sound not unlike a swarm of bees, so I wouldn’t recommend using them up close during any quieter moments: like during your vows or speeches, but from 30m away you can barely hear it, so anything is possible. I will of course ensure that the drone is grounded during important parts of your day to maintain the right atmosphere.
The Quality of Drone Photographs
Just like regular cameras, the quality of drone photographs can vary. However, many drones, including the one I use, are capable of capturing high-quality images. I’d be happy to show you some examples of my drone wedding photography so you can see the quality for yourself.
Do I Need Permission from My Venue?
Yes, you will need to obtain permission from your venue before we can use a drone. If you’re interested in drone photography, it’s a good idea to discuss this with your venue early on, so they have time to put any necessary measures in place. I’m always happy to assist you with this process if needed.
Is Drone Photography Suitable for Every Wedding Venue?
Not every venue is suitable for drone photography – it primarily depends on the amount of outdoor space available, and your proximity to the likes of Gatwick airport. If you’d like advice on whether your chosen venue in West Sussex, Surrey, or beyond is suitable for drone photography, I’d be more than happy to help. Even if I haven’t worked at your venue before, I’m happy to do some research to see if drone photography is an option for your wedding.
If you’d like to discuss drone wedding photography further, or if you have any other questions, please do get in touch. I’m a wedding photographer based in Horsham, West Sussex but work across Surrey, Kent and sometimes even further afield and I’d love to help make your wedding photography as unique and special as your big day!
