I wanted to share with you all something that’s been on my mind for a little while now, and this the question of when and how and when do we review the work done by someone who does some work for us.
As a freelance photographer in West Sussex, I rely heavily on people recommending me as a photographer. I’m pleased to say that the vast majority of people I take photos for are more than happy to recommend me to their friends and family, and without those personal recommendations I wouldn’t be in the position I am today as one of Horsham’s leading photographers.
Now there’s many different ways of finding the best photographer in Horsham, Crawley, Billingshurst, West Sussex…or wherever you are, your friends will recommend (or warn you) of some, and for the vast majority of people a personal recommendation is as good as it gets! I’ve had so many people come to me through personal recommendations about my photography that I am humbled by some of the comments I’ve heard my customers say about the quality of my photos, and the way that I relate to my customers.
Secondly there’s the growing popularity of social media and the ever present ‘like’ button to show you how many people have approved of a photographer’s work, and then there’s the growing popularity of review websites showing you what others have said about a particular photographer’s work.
Now reviews, I personally ask all my customers to write something on either my freeindex page or my Google Places page why these specific places and not others, simply because these are the places I hope that people will find the quickest in online searches. I could use many other review sites, but to be honest I’m not a huge multi-national corporation so there’s not hundreds of thousands of customers looking for me all over the internet, it’s just me in West Sussex, looking for local customers who want great quality photography from a great local photographer!
So why write a review? Have you ever submitted a project to your boss and they look at it and say “That’s fine” or worse, they don’t even look at it and don’t ever thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into what you’ve been doing? Now at least most people in the world work as part of a team, be that a department within a company or just simply they have colleagues who can celebrate with them all the hard work that’s been done.
Now imagine working on your own each and every day, your ‘boss’ is a customer who you’ve met only once and you work hard to produce the best result you can, and then they don’t even email you to say ‘We got our photos, they’re great! Thanks!’ (That literally took me less than 5 seconds to write!) How would that make someone feel, to be honest, when it happens to me I feel invisible and like my work is worthless!
But how great is it, when your boss/client comes back to you after looking through your work and says “Thanks! We’re so pleased with your work, it’s exactly what we were looking for and we’re so pleased that we got you to do it. We think you’ve done us and yourself proud!” I don’t know how that makes you feel, but for me it makes me feel like a million pounds, like I’m now the best photographer in Horsham and West Sussex! But it also humbles me, because I know that they’ve taken the time to thank me for something that they’ve paid me to do, and really I’ve only done my job.
So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone of you out there who have taken the time out of your busy lives to write me a review, or email me, or call me, or however you’ve chosen to shown your thanks for my work! I know it’s my way of making a living, and I get paid for it, but you make my job so much more enjoyable!
I also wanted to share a few of my favourites.
You have covered both my daughter’s weddings and on both occasions it has been a pleasure. Thank you so very much for the wonderful photographs. I would certainly, without hesitation, recommend you.
Good luck for the future and congratulations again to your and your wife on the new arrival.
I love this one, and it’s got to be my favourite because it’s not only one job I’m being thanked for…it’s two! I’ve done two jobs that Phyl has seen the results of and she’s delighted with them! I got this email in the middle of a rough week…and it made my week!
I attended the photo session with my husband and 2 year old and 9 month old. Alex was brilliant especially as my daughter was very shy at first, he has caught such beautiful images of the kids; their real personalities! I can’t wait to show off our photographs to everyone we are so pleased with them! The atmosphere was great, Alex’s energy is fun with a great sense of humour and patient with the children, and there was relaxing music playing which really added to the ambiance.
I couldn’t recommend Alex at Pure Photos enough and we will definitely be using them for further photograph sessions. Afterwards he had a slideshow of the photographs taken by the evening of the shoot, we were able to choose the ones we wanted and have had them back within 2 days of the shoot, fully edited. Very fast and very professional service, we couldn’t be happier!
Another great review…what can I say, I always try my best to provide great service to my customers and when someone thanks me for it…it brings a great big smile to my face!
I approached Alex to take some promotional photos of me to help start my career as a female vocalist. I was quite nervous and very uncomfortable having them taken (I really don’t like having my photo taken!) but Alex was very patient with me and put me at ease.
I found Alex to be very friendly and relaxed, and also very happy to accommodate my ideas as well as his own. In the end, I got some great shots which I am really pleased with.
The service after the photo shoot was also very good, great communication and speedy delivery of the photos, all at a great price too.
This customer was rather shy about having her photo taken, and to start with for both of us it felt like pulling teeth, but we laughed and joked and put on some music that we both enjoyed, soon she was relaxed and looking amazing! Honestly, if you want to ruin any photo, however amazing you look in the flesh, just look stressed and like you don’t want to be there, if you’re relaxed and smiling naturally (fake smiles are so obvious!) everyone looks great! I also like this one because it’s not often that people talk about prices in reviews for my photos…and it’s the only thing I don’t expect customers to rave about! But when they do it tells me that I’m doing my work right!
We booked a family photo shoot with Alex and we are delighted with the results. Alex was very friendly with our two young boys and made us feel very relaxed.
He sent us the cd with our edited photos very quickly and I was able to use them in time for christmas presents. We are so thrilled with our photographs that we will be using Pure photos in the future and recommend Alex to friends and family.
Recommendations are worth their weight in gold! Both online and personally! As a photographer, people who recommend my work, be that in the Studio, as a wedding photographer, providing event photography…are my favourite customers!
All the above quotes are real reviews and emails sent to me about my work. They are all part of the reason why I do what I do, I love taking photos, I love helping people to relax and enjoy the experience, and I love delivering great photos to my customers. And getting great reviews from my customers is just the icing on the cake for me!
