I’m excited to be photographing more families outdoors in the coming months! The closing down of my studio, is certainly the end of an era for my work, but most importantly it’s the jump into something new and in my opinion far more exciting. Outdoor Photography for families in West Sussex!
For years now, I’ve photographed families against the same white background, every family unique and every image personal to them. But I’ve always thought there was something missing and over the last couple of years I’ve come to realise that what was missing was the real world. People don’t live in a white box (well most of us don’t!) sure the colours are vibrant, and the lighting is always perfect, but as a society we’ve come to value what’s real.
So for the last couple of years I’ve really been pushing to photograph as many families, and individuals, outdoors as possible. Outdoor family photography pushes the limits of what can be achieved (with minimal kit and being weather dependant!) I’ve stretched myself to shoot family portraits in every type of environment, from forests to fields and even the odd mountain and the results have been absolutely beautiful!
What I have found is that rain doesn’t have to stop play, we just all have to come prepared to capture the best photos we can. For example, right now it’s winter, so don’t expect the same type of photo shoot as you’d get in the middle of summer. And don’t look to book a bluebell wood photo shoot in the autumn (Bluebells bloom at the end of April into early May) so it won’t work. Working with the seasons allows us to be in sync with nature and to capture beautiful family and portrait photos of you across all the seasons.
To give you an idea of what I will be photographing and roughly when:
Spring is a time of new birth, great for photos of little ones exploring fields of daffodils or bluebells (NB: these two flowers don’t come out at the same time! Daffodils are up early in spring and bluebells come up right at the end to announce the arrival of summer!) With buds on trees and birds nesting it’s an amazing time of year to capture your family. It’s a great time of year to get caught in a rain shower, so think bright coats, wellies and umbrellas and jumping in puddles in the sunshine!
Summer is a glorious time of year for outdoor photography, with long hazy days, fields of long grass wild flowers and beautiful flowers and greenery everywhere. In late summer fields of crops are bursting to be harvested and provide a beautiful and romantic background for your family photos. For kids summer is a great time to be outdoors, chasing butterflies, pond dipping at the beach and generally exploring the great outdoors. It’s also wedding season and every weekend the church bells will be ringing the joy of another happy couple.
Autumn is the time to wear those thick woolly jumpers and explore the woods as trees turn to gold, it’s time for visits to the pier to watch the waves crash on the shore or take a brisk walk up on the South Downs to see the views. It’s time for picking apples and lighting fires. Autumn is a fantastic time of year to be outside.
Winter is great for jumping in muddy puddles, great for walking through the woods and wearing bright colours, it’s great for photos at home, cuddled up in front of a log fire and reading a good book. If the weather works in our favour, it’s also a great time for family photos in the snow, building snow men, children with rosy cheeks and frosty breath.
The whole year is ready and waiting to be photographed. Come along and book yourselves in.
